Take a Look
Multi-day trips
Because of renewed interest, we resumed the backpacking trips in 2004, with a scheduled 3-day hike in Top of the World Provincial Park (PP), followed by the same in Kokanee Glacier PP, and Kokanee Glacier again in’ 05. 2006 includes Cathedral PP, actually a “duffel & daypack” trip, Aug 7-11. This includes one day for travel each way, including the bus in & out. In 20’07, we will be hiking in Elk Lakes PP in the East Kootenays. Tentative week is the same, again leaving on BC Day. The list of places that members are keen to explore, some for the first time, and others to rekindle fond memories, is growing quickly. The list includes, but is not confined to: Lake of the Hanging Glacier (in the works for ‘08), Blue Grouse Basin/Boot & Tanal Lakes via Enterprise Creek (west entrance to Kokanee Glacier PP), considered for ‘09, Mt Revelstoke (drive & daypack), Berg Lake, Bugaboo Base Camp, and a return to Top of the World PP. This is prompted by the rainstorm that necessitated a quick in & out. The time left, warm and sunny of course, was spent warming up in Lussier Hot Springs and hiking to the Mt Swansea lookout above Invermere. Those interested in other venues should contact a Field Trip Director, for consideration by the Committee.

Astronomy Night
Please note the evening of September 23 for another exciting look at the heavens. Unfortunately, the Spring viewings were both clouded out. Last Autumn, enthusiasm was so great that attendees agreed unanimously that the chairs were superfluous. No one sat at all, and when Brian mentioned that his scheduled two hours were coming to an end, he was very pleasantly surprised by calls for more! And more! The cloud alternate date will, of course, be September 30. Brian states, “To push it a week later just wouldn't work, because then we'd be fighting against a Full Moon. Unfortunately there will no bright planets visible in the evening sky on these dates, but lots of other interesting objects will be visible. If we end up viewing on the 30th, we'll have a nice look at a young moon as well.

**JUST A REMINDER **
1.Common courtesy and common sense dictates calling the contact person or your local rep to confirm attendance on a trip. Lead-time for trips is as much as nine months. Nothing is written in stone and changes may be necessary, due to weather conditions or personal reasons! Don’t wait until the last minute to phone…..leader may have already left, especially if camping or long distances are involved.
2.Suggestions for new areas to visit? Willing to lead a hike? Please contact a Field Trip Director with ideas. Thanks to all -- we learn so much from each of you.
3.The leader of an outing is responsible for:
-Finding a replacement contact/leader if you cannot be available for your planned outing. A replacement leader may choose to do the same outing, or they may suggest another,
-Getting the waiver form signed by every person attending, and forwarding this form to Webb Webster immediately. Waiver forms are included in your newsletter (if you are getting hard copy), one for each hike you are leading. If yours is email, please request the waiver as an attachment and the Publisher or the Treasurer will be happy to supply it,
-Making sure that all vehicles are running and moving after a trip, especially in winter,
-Arranging to have the trip report forwarded to the Publisher. You choose whether to write it or delegate to another, but advise the Publisher from whom to expect it. Note the space on the waiver form. The writer also has the obligation to get the report submitted in time!

Deadline for submissions for the next newsletter is August 16, 2006

Material accepted by the Publisher any time up to this date. We reserve the right to edit for space, clarity, spelling and syntax. Any major changes will be discussed with the contributor.
